Stories have the incredible power to draw us in and move us emotionally. At The Story Catcher, we help clients harness the power of stories to connect deeply with their audiences. To show just how captivating stories can be, even when fictional, let me share an experience from my childhood.
Immersing Myself in a Chilling Unsolved Mystery
I am sitting in my parents’ house’s rather large and incredibly dark family room. I’m not a visitor. I still live here because I’m only 14.
Tonight, I find myself alone. It’s a rare occurrence and feels strange because I’m the oldest of 5 kids.
So, I’m taking advantage of my solitude by doing something fun. I turn off the lights and turn on the TV show Unsolved Mysteries.
I love this show. It is filled with stories that send shivers down my spine. I’m lying on the couch parallel to the television and perpendicular to the old sliding glass doors leading out to the unfinished closed-in patio where many a ping-pong match has been held. I can’t see the table, of course. It’s nighttime, the lights are off, and a lace curtain obscures the view during the daylight hours.
Tonight’s unsolved mystery tells the tale of a fugitive on the run who committed the horrific murder of an entire family and a few single college students. The music grows increasingly ominous, intensifying my fear level and increasing my heartbeat like I have just finished a 5K.
They have me sucked in.
I’m so in that I’m convinced this murdering criminal is currently hiding somewhere inside my house. My muscles tense up.
I need to pee. But, the fear of feeling a cold hand grab my ankles as I leave the sofa eliminates any chance of a trip to the bathroom happening. I keep watching and listening to the story, knowing that at any minute, my life may end.
I scan my surroundings and glance towards the curtain covering the sliding glass door.
A light flashes on, and a face appears through the lace window covering, glowing with a wicked smile. I make a sound combining the scream of a scared little girl and a pubescent boy, jump to my feet, and run towards the back of the house.
And then I hear my soon-to-be murderer laugh. It sounds familiar. The murderer turns out to be my father. You see, tonight, he decided, was the perfect moment to play a gag on his unsuspecting son by grabbing a flashlight from the garage and placing his glowing face in the glass he knew would soon come into my view. I laughed…but I’ll admit it wasn’t right away.
Lessons on the Power of Narrative
This experience shows how stories create strong emotions and an altered sense of reality. I was completely immersed in the TV drama, overlooking logic in favor of mounting fear. The story spurred a physical reaction as my muscles tensed. I even avoided a bathroom trip, irrationally convinced the show’s fictional killer would grab me.
When my dad pulled a prank to scare me, it highlighted the narrative’s hold on my imagination. I screamed and ran, even though my rational mind knew my father posed no real threat. This comical moment reinforced the Story Catcher’s concept of “relating” to audiences through shared emotions and experiences.
Harnessing the Power of Stories for Your Brand
At The Story Catcher, we use the power of stories strategically. We help clients “recognize” the stories already present in their lives, “relate” to audiences by evoking emotion, and “remember” forgotten tales that can build connection. My brush with suspense fiction shows how even unrealistic stories can profoundly impact us when told skillfully. Let us help you discover and refine the stories that captivate your customers.
